I received an e-mail today about a pastor who was talking about how he could see flames from his backyard on TV last night during a previous fire. During the fire, his family was told to evacuate. They were warned a couple of hours in advance, so they had a couple of hours to think about, "What will we take with us and what will we leave behind.?" They didn't even fill their car completely. They packed up pictures, and some papers, and their bibles, and some hard drives, but that was about it. They realized that most of it was very replaceable. That it is just stuff.
He said that the greatest things in life are not things...When disasters come along, we realize that our value is not found in our valuables, and that our self-worth is not tied to our net worth. It is in times like these that we realize there's a whole lot more important in life than what’s material...The spiritual and relational parts of life are far more important!
I have just realized in a couple of days being amongst craziness that we leave everything here in the end and what really matters is your spiritual and relational parts like he said...

Fires of Importance

So true! Our family has learned this too. When we were asked to evacuate all we took were nonreplaceable things like pictures, important docs., memorable items and that's about it. It wasn't nearly as much as I would have thought. Just knowing your family is safe is comforting enough!
